Amlogic S805

The Amlogic S805 is a 28nm quad-core Cortex-A5 SoC from 2014 with a Mali-450 MP2 GPU, built for entry-level TV boxes and budget single-board computers.

Announced in 2014, the Amlogic S805 pairs four ARM Cortex-A5 cores at 1.5GHz with a 500MHz Mali-450 MP2 GPU on a 28nm HKMG process. Its memory controller handles DDR3/DDR3L and LPDDR2/LPDDR3 at 800MHz over a 32-bit bus, which caps practical board designs at 1-2GB of RAM.

The chip was designed for cheap Android TV boxes, and its roughly 5W power envelope reflects that. Cortex-A5 is an in-order ARMv7 core, so per-core throughput is modest even next to the Cortex-A53 parts that replaced it a year later. Hardware video decode covers H.264 and H.265, which is what made the S805 attractive for media playback at the price. Its best-known single-board computer is the Hardkernel ODROID-C1.
